Behavioral Finance
The markets are reacting very badly to the recent economic crisis, The economy, the capital markets, and banking system are at best uncertain and we're all standing around wondering what's going on.
What's going on?
In spite of traditional wisdom that
our financial markets are highly efficient, there have been many studies that
have shown several phenomena in securities markets that contradict the efficient
market hypothesis. Such phenomena are often referred to as stock market
anomalies.
Behavioral Finance is a branch within the field of
finance which explores psychology-based theories to explain such irregularities.
Within the Behavioral Finance realm it is assumed that the emotional
characteristics of market participants and the flow of information amongst them
systematically influence investment decisions as well as market outcomes.
We do not always react rationally when making decisions under pressure. There is a very interesting body of research from the guru's in the field such as Vernon Smith and his 2002 Noble Price for Economics partner Daniel Kahneman. A new book from Dan Ariely entitled Predictably Irrational is also a great read.
Behavioral
Finance seems to be making more and more sense these days. ASCI has developed a Behavioral Finance with TAIS workshop along with a one hour lecture for conferences and meetings. There is more information on the workshop and lecture at our site.
As for what's going on, check out the New Times summary of Credit Crisis - The Essentials for the US perspective, the Asian view Belly ache from the Economist.com and of course the Canadian outlook from the Globe & Mail. |

Situational Leadership and Style
|
Situational Leadership Theory is getting a lot of air time these days around board room tables and learning organizations. Predicting the future via forecasting and strategy is becoming more of a challenge the faster our world changes. We are seeing more successful companies push critical real time decisions down into the organization by using a matrix management model. Our Situational Leadership workshops are in high demand at ASCI because they consider individual style plus team dynamics (using TAIS) and insert the leadership issues (the situations) facing the team in context with how they will perform under pressure.
Corporations are beginning
to see that the best answer to any business problem or dilemma is "it
depends". It depends on the situation, on who you are, on who you're
dealing with and on a million other possibilities managing. So how do we pass
along wisdom, how do we learn, why do we read all those business books?
It depends, really.
The reason Situational Leadership and Business Improvisation are becoming more prevalent within corporate strategy is that they are, at their best, processes not answers. more...

The Story of the Sign This short film was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival this year. It was brought to our attention by a client in Ottawa. It is worth taking a minute to watch if you're working on a project and could use a new perspective. Enjoy...

Nasty as they wanna be? Policing Flickr.com
Situational Leadership and Business Improvisation at its finest.
|
Director of Community Heather Champ and her team have the ultimate Business Improvisation mandate: figure out what gets to stay and what gets cut from the popular photo sharing web site Flickr.com. There are rules, or maybe they're more like guidelines, but they clearly change all the time. It depends (sound familiar)?
This is a fascinating article by Chris Colin of the San Francisco Chronicle, enjoy. |

Team Building Gone Wrong
As you may know team building is a big part of what we do here at ASCI. Whether its the Go Game, a Team Building Workshop or our latest and greatest Spy Game we are always very aware and concerned for the safety of our clients. We thought we would share this article about a team building event gone wrong in London England.
Armed police called out to team-building exercise. A marketing firm's team-building exercise sparked an armed police siege because it involved a game using imitation firearms.
Members of the public dialed 999 after fearing for their lives outside an
office block in Southend, Essex. They reported seeing two men, both carrying
guns and dressed in dark clothing, entering the headquarters of Converso
Contact Centres.
Armed police surrounded the building, only to find the men had been taking
part in a morale building exercise.
A spokeswoman for Essex Police said the call centre firm had been "offered
suitable words of advice" after Friday's incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Tim Raymond added: "The two men involved
clearly did not think about the implications of their actions. This was
potentially a very dangerous situation and, as such, armed officers were
deployed. The full story... |
